Step-by-Step Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans with butter or cooking spray. Dust the pans with flour.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.
- Add eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, orange zest, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed until smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
- Carefully stir in boiling water until fully incorporated.
- Divide batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Once baked, let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Generously frost the top of one layer with chocolate ganache, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides.

Notes
Ensure your eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature for a smooth batter. Don’t overmix to maintain light, fluffy layers.
