Step-by-Step Instructions for Black Lemonade
- In a small pot, combine ¾ cup sugar and ¾ cup water. Bring this mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once it boils, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 3 to 4 minutes, until fully dissolved. You'll know it’s ready when the liquid is clear and slightly thickened. Remove from heat, then stir in the black gel food color until evenly mixed, and set aside to cool.
- While the sugar syrup cools, take a large pitcher and pour in 1 ½ cups of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Make sure to choose juicing lemons that are firm and heavy for the juiciest results.
- Once the sugar syrup is cooled, add it to the pitcher with the lemon juice. Then, pour in 4 cups of cold water. Mix everything together well using a sturdy spoon.
- To serve, fill glasses with ice cubes to keep the Black Lemonade chilled. Pour the mixture over the ice, filling each glass generously. Garnish with a lemon slice or fresh mint if desired.

Notes
Start with less sugar in the syrup and adjust to taste after mixing. Always opt for fresh lemon juice to maximize flavor. You can freeze leftover Black Lemonade in ice cube trays for future drinks.
